Consume + Create: A Spring Offering
On April 28th, a friend came by my clinic for a silent meditation session. Before we sat down, we caught up a bit—nothing planned, just being present. We began to talk about our meditation practice and how it shows up in our emotional / psychological experience. I showed him the drum machine I’d been playing with lately. Making myself dance has been a way to move through some heavy feelings. It has been its own meditation, its own kind of medicine.
Words from conversation became sounds from instruments. We started making music—just letting sound unfold, no words, no rules. A sonic flow through synchronicity. In that moment, something shifted. We weren’t just making music; we were transmuting energy. It felt free. And then, when we finally sat in silence, it felt earned. Like the music had cleared a space for stillness to land.
Later that night, he sent me his side of the recording. I recorded my own drum and synth performance on video. I layered it all together and ran it through a visual editor and RGB video synthesizer. What you see here is our audio—our experience—translated into Red, Green, and Blue waves.
This piece is an expression of Spring through the lens of Five Element Theory. Wood energy moves upward, outward. It seeks to grow, to reach, to transform feeling into form. It is the energy of “Consume and Create.” Whether or not this video lands the way I intended, the process itself was the practice.
Spring invites us to tend our inner garden. As we head into the rest of the year, we’ll be asked to notice what harmonizes—and what stagnates.
I’m writing an article called Consume + Create that explores the rebirth energy of Spring in Taoist thought. I look forward to sharing it with you.
Until then, I offer this little depiction of its inception.
